BETHANY METHODIST CHURCH REGISTER

This register was kept by the pastors of Bethany Methodist Church from 1888 until the closing of the church in 1965. Please click on the square corner brackets icon on the right of the cover/page image for the flipbook to open in full-screen mode.

Note that Freeman Cemetery was not a church cemetery, but a community cemetery. It was right down the road from Bethany, and many of the Bethany families used Freeman as their burying ground. However, there are others in Freeman who were not members of Bethany. Below the flipbook is a name list, which you can search by using Ctrl-F. Note that spellings are irregular and handwriting can be challenging to read.

Register of Infant Baptisms (Please note that these are baptismal dates rather than birth dates. Also be advised that some of these dates may be incorrect; the recorder used a single number—like 3 or 4—for the year; this was interpreted as being 190x rather than 189x because there were several 189x years where the year was given as two numerals.)

In our bodies we carry the blood of our ancestors and the seeds of the future generations. We are a living conduit to all life. When we contemplate the vastness of the interwoven network that we are tied to, our individual threads of life seem far less fragile. We are strengthened by who we come from and inspired by the those who will follow.

--Sherri Mitchell Weh'na Ha'mu Kwasset

The cemetery is an open space among the ruins, covered in winter with violets and daisies. It might make one in love with death, to think that one should be buried in so sweet a place.

--Percy Bysshe Shelley, Adonais
