The families that lived in the area around Freeman Cemetery were bound in life as well as in their shared burying ground. Several important early developments in Weakley County occurred in this area, and the families shared with each other in their support of religious and educational institutions. The families frequently intermarried and created a web of family and friends that now extends to Martin, surrounding areas, and across the state and country.

BETHANY METHODIST CHURCH

Bethany Methodist Church was designed and built by Tom C. Wood, c. 1887, on land he had donated on Bethany Church Road. For families in the region, the church provided Sunday school, church services, religious music, weddings, baptisms, and funerals for more than 70 years. Over the years, as the city of Martin expanded, many churches became available in town, including First United Methodist Church. Bethany Methodist Church closed on February 21, 1965.

EASTERN ACADEMY
WEAKLEY COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Eastern Academy was founded c. 1889, built on Wood property ¼ mile west of Bethany Church Road. From its founding, Eastern Academy enrolled girls as well as boys. In 1902-03, enrollment was 53; in 1914-15, enrollment was c. 54; five or six teachers were teaching there.

We are grateful for all the help over the years from the local historical society and its president, Michael Rea, and the staff of the C. E. Weldon Public Library. Rea has continuously assisted with research and took many of the tombstone photos used in this website. We recommend that everyone support their local historical societies and public libraries. Go here to visit Weakley County's.
